Vinod Gupta is a businessman in the database industry. He started his first company not long after earning a master’s degree at the University of Nebraska in 1971. This eventually became a publicly-traded company worth hundreds of millions. In February 2008, he started Everest Group LLC in Omaha, Nebraska.

He was born in the 1940s in Rampur Manhyaran. This is a rural village north of Delhi in India. He was in the Indian Air Force before becoming a student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.
After earning a B.Tech degree in 1967, he moved to the United States to complete his education. He credits Professor Bill Splinter for this decision. He had been a visiting professor at ITT from the University of Nebraska.
He studied agricultural engineering. While his career went another way, Vinod Gupta says that his education was still critical for all the success that followed. Being Buddhist, he feels a responsibility to help younger people. He has decided that helping others get an education is the best thing he can do. He helps students in the United States and India. This money is given through the Vinod Gupta Foundation.
One example of his philanthropy is the Vinod Gupta School of Management. This school was set up in India in 1993 and has earned a reputation as one of the best business schools in that part of the world. He wanted to establish a place where students could learn about management and technology. It is similar to the Sloan School of Management which is a school at MIT. Students can earn an MBA, Executive MBA, and a Ph.D. in Management.
